It is my honour to welcome you to the website of Harmony College 2022, where you can find all of the information you will need, and book your place at the event.

After such a long time without a face to face educational event it is such an exciting moment for me and the team to be able to bring you this year’s in-person Harmony College.

In 2022, myself and our faculty will be bringing you more options than ever, to make this a truly memorable return to face to face education. I am excited to tell you that in addition to the usual stream offerings, we will also be offering a full youth stream, an arranging stream and a small chorus coaching stream (as part of the quartet stream).

Joining our expert team of British educators this year is Theo Hicks from the USA. I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am to have Theo with us.

Theodore Hicks is the Director of Choral Activities and Voice Area Coordinator at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. He is also the musical director of the Greater Indianapolis Chapter, Circle City Sound, and sings lead in the 2015 International Champion Quartet, Instant Classic. He has a wide range of teaching experience, having taught K-12 choral and general music throughout his public school teaching career. Theodore also has several years of college-teaching experience, having taught classes in ear training and sight-singing, conducting, and directing choral ensembles at the university level. At Anderson University, he teaches advanced choral conducting, secondary choral methods, voice lessons, and conducts the AU Chorale and Women’s Chorus.

Behind the scenes, Shanna Wells and her events team are looking after the organisation and logistics of the event. The team have worked tirelessly to make this event not only special, but also as cost-effective and affordable as possible. As always there are a variety of price options to suit a variety of budgets, and several scholarships and awards available to those who apply. I hope you enjoy browsing the website and that you find the booking process quick and easy. I look forward to welcoming you to Nottingham this August, to a Harmony College which will be as wonderful as ever!

Personal Development Session 11 The Wonderful World of Overtones

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Feedback form is now closed.
Pre-Requisite(s):
Comfortable with some basic maths — multiplication, fraction & ratios
The ability to identify pitches and intervals on sheet music will be useful, but is actually not strictly necessary for this one

Barbershoppers talk about overtones a lot, but what exactly are they? In this session, we’ll find out. We’ll also explore the harmonic series, the crucial role it plays in our understanding of harmony and overtones, and even how it’s all linked to the musical idea of timbre (i.e. why a particular instrument or sound has the characteristic quality it does). There will also be lots of audio examples — if you’ve historically struggled to hear overtones when someone tries to point them out to you, hopefully this session will leave your ears with a new appreciation!
